Arms
Many
women and some men have unwanted hair on their arms. Bleaching,
shaving and waxing are temporary solutions with less than
desirable results. Since arms are often visible,
dark, thick or long hair often causes embarrassment and
self-consciousness. Electrolysis is the only permanent
way to relieve you of this problem. When the hair is removed,
the arms look thinner and clean.
During
puberty or during hormone changes throughout your life
this area may have experienced hair growth. Hair receptors
in this area may be more sensitive to free floating testosterone
or other hormones called androgens that produce hair growth.
Once these receptors have been activated, the hair will grow darker / stronger and be more noticeable. Often, as we age, the amount of hair may remain the same
but what hair is there grows longer and becomes more visible. Either way, these hairs will not go away on their own; they will need electrolysis to permanently remove them.
For
best results, appointments should be made in weekly increments
to keep up with the hair growth cycles and to treat the
hairs when they are weakest.
During
treatment you will lie on your back with your arm elevated
on a small pillow. As an area is treated ice will be applied
when another area is started. It is helpful to keep ice
on the treated area for at least an hour to help with
any swelling.
Hair
Growth Cycles:
It
is important to understand hair growth cycles. Hairs grow
and rest in cycles so the hair that you currently have
is not all the hair you have in total. When a hair has
completed its growth cycle the follicle releases the hair
and goes into a dormant cycle. This cycle allows the follicle
to rejuvenate while another hair is formed. This cycle
can last from six weeks to two months before the hair
grows again. The active growth cycle is the only time
that a hair should be treated with electrolysis. When the
hair first starts to grow it is at it’s weakest which is why it is important
to stay on a strict schedule so the hairs can be treated
most effectively and die faster. In the beginning the
appointments will be closer together, usually once a week,
since there will be more hairs in active growth cycles.
As hairs are treated and die, the appointments will be
farther apart.
